The
Challenges

The Cape Cod Cottage was built in the 1960s and updated in the 90s by previous owners. Our clients had lived there for 10 years and decided to remodel and update the entire first floor. Being a young family, they wanted additional storage space, a more open floor plan, and a place to host family and friends. Their remodel included the kitchen, dining, entry, utility room, master bedroom, closet, and master bathroom with an added powder bathroom. Older houses have small spaces with short ceilings. Often rooms feel compact and lack storage space. The biggest challenge at the Cape Cod Cottage was rearranging and broadening their tiny master bathroom. The master bathroom was also the only bathroom available to guests on the main floor of the house. They wanted a half bath exclusively for guests. The kitchen also had a small layout, fur downs, and felt tight, dark, and compact. They had minimal storage for their young family and for hosting others. Additionally, the washer and dryer were in the kitchen; an awkward, noisy inconvenience.

Our
Solution

Our first step in creating more storage and space was to rearrange the master suite area. By reorganizing unnecessary flex space and deleting a utility wall, we created one large, continuous closet and a master bathroom three times the size of the former.

In the kitchen, we made hosting family dinners and small groups much easier by removing walls impeding the flow to the dining room and relocating the utility room. She now has a “mom command center desk” and plenty of space to wash baseball pants, store supplies, and get work done. We also relocated the garage entry and added an addition for the powder bathroom, extended the back wall of the kitchen, and built a large island that seats 3 adults comfortably.

To create additional storage, we gave them two pantry solutions: one in the form of a stain-grade pantry tower (which feels like a free-standing piece of furniture), and secondly, we made use of a closet by the stairway as an overstock pantry.

Our client described her style as a “cozy but sophisticated farmhouse with oodles of charm.” Our mission was to preserve the history of the home and bring it into the 21st century. With tongue and groove in the laundry room, wainscoting and wallpaper in the powder bathroom, finished in timeless paint colors, nothing feels on trend, but timeless.
