What to Expect When Working with a Design-Build Firm

If you’re thinking about building a custom home—or finally diving into that big renovation—you might be feeling a little unsure about where to start. Architect? Designer? Contractor? Pinterest board?

We hear this all the time:

“I have an idea of what I want… I just don’t know how to get there.”

That’s exactly where a design-build firm comes in.

At Our House Your Home, we’ve built a trusted team—both in-house and through our network of expert trade partners, architects, and engineers—so you don’t have to start from scratch. Our process is proven, our people are the best in the business, and we manage every step from concept to completion. It’s all designed to give you an enjoyable, high-touch experience with one team leading the way.

Here’s what that actually looks like:

1. First, we talk. Like, really talk.

We always start with a conversation—whether it’s a phone call, a Zoom, or an in-person meet & greet. We want to understand how you live, what your family needs, and what you want this home to feel like. This isn’t a presentation—it’s a real back-and-forth. We ask a lot of questions (the fun kind and the practical ones), and we start to get a feel for your priorities, your budget, and your timeline.

We always say: we’re not designing a home, we’re designing your home.

2. Then, we build your team.

Once we’re aligned, we’ll move forward with a Professional Services Agreement—which includes architectural planning, estimating, and initial design concepts. This is when we bring in the experts: architects, engineers, lead designer, and trusted trade partners—people we’ve worked with time and time again, who know how to bring a vision to life.

We’re refining the plan, pulling inspiration, and making sure every choice serves your family, your taste, and your long-term goals.

3. Now we build your home (or reimagine your current one).

With the plan in place, construction begins—and we stay deeply involved. You’ll get regular updates, clear communication, and a team that’s truly hands-on throughout the process. We don’t just care about the end result—we care about how it feels to get there.

We’ve worked with families who are living through renovations and others who are building from the ground up. In either case, we stay organized, responsive, and focused on quality from foundation to finish.

4. And finally, we deliver a turnkey, toast-ready home.

This is the part we love most—handing over a home that’s not just done, but fully ready to be lived in and loved.

No missing fixtures, no to-do lists for you to manage. Just a home that’s been thoughtfully designed, well built, and polished down to the smallest detail. We call it “toast-ready” because our clients walk in, pop a bottle of something good, and immediately feel at home.

What Makes Design-Build Different?

One team. One plan. One shared vision.

It’s not just about simplifying the process (though it absolutely does that)—it’s about collaboration, clarity, and creating a home that truly reflects you. When design and construction live under one roof, everything feels more connected—from ideas to implementation.

If you’re at the beginning stages of your project and want a team that knows how to lead with clarity, care, and creativity—we’d love to be that for you.
